After a two-goal, three-assist night in a 6–2 win at Utah on 17 October, the Edmonton Oilers captain had 23 points in eight games, leading the league and matching Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux for the most assists through a player's first eight games of a season.

Early Years: Exceptional Status
McDavid grew up in Newmarket, Ontario, and was so far ahead of his peers that in 2012 he was granted exceptional player status to join the Ontario Hockey League at just 15. The Erie Otters took him first overall, and over three seasons he scored 285 points, captaining the side in 2014–15 when he put up 120 points in 47 games. Edmonton made him the first pick of the 2015 NHL Draft.

The Breakthrough: Captain at 19
On 5 October 2016 the Oilers named him captain aged 19 years and 266 days, the youngest in NHL history. He responded with 100 points, the Art Ross Trophy, the Ted Lindsay Award and the Hart Trophy as league MVP in 2016–17, then won the scoring title again in 2017–18. Peak Years: 153 Points and Playoff Heartbreak
In 2022–23 McDavid scored 64 goals and 153 points, the most in a season since 1996, sweeping the Hart, Art Ross, Ted Lindsay and Rocket Richard. The next year he reached 100 assists, tying the NHL single-season record, and won the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP even though Edmonton lost the 2024 Stanley Cup Final to Florida in seven games. The Panthers beat them again in the 2025 Final.

Recent Seasons
McDavid signed a two-year contract extension with Edmonton in October 2025, then produced 138 points in 2025–26 to win his sixth Art Ross Trophy and fifth Ted Lindsay Award. At the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan Cortina he was voted tournament MVP as Canada took silver, beaten 2–1 by the USA in overtime in the final. The Oilers fell to the Anaheim Ducks in the first round of the 2026 playoffs, but his start to 2026–27 suggests he is as hungry as ever.
