Twenty years after its NBC debut on 3 October 2006, Friday Night Lights is back in the headlines. In 2026 the cast and writers gathered at the ATX TV Festival in Austin to celebrate the anniversary, while the Peacock reboot announced in December 2024 hit the brakes - NBC's scripted chief told Deadline in October 2026 that the project is "on pause".
Whatever happens next, the original five seasons remain one of the finest dramas American television has made. Discover more classic shows in our TV series collection.

From Book to Small Screen
The story began with Buzz Bissinger's acclaimed account of a season with the Permian Panthers of Odessa, Texas. Peter Berg turned it into a 2004 film, then developed the TV version around a fictional town called Dillon, with Jason Katims as showrunner.
The pilot hit hard: star quarterback Jason Street, played by Scott Porter, is paralysed in the season opener, and the whole town has to rethink what football means to it.

Clear Eyes, Full Hearts
At the centre was a marriage, not a scoreboard. Kyle Chandler's Coach Eric Taylor and Connie Britton's Tami Taylor became one of television's most admired couples. Around them grew a superb young cast: Zach Gilford as anxious quarterback Matt Saracen, Taylor Kitsch as Tim Riggins, Adrianne Palicki as Tyra Collette, Jesse Plemons as Landry Clarke and Aimee Teegarden as Julie Taylor.
Coach Taylor's locker room mantra, "Clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose", jumped from the screen into real sports teams and fan culture.

Behind the Scenes
The show looked unlike anything else on network TV. Scenes were shot documentary style with three cameras, often in a single take, with little rehearsal or blocking. Real Texas locations replaced sound stages, with hundreds of locals as extras.
Ratings were the problem. Critics adored it, but audiences averaged around six million in the first two seasons. NBC's answer was an unusual cost-sharing deal with DirecTV, which kept the show alive for three more seasons. Season 4 refreshed the line-up as Coach Taylor took over the underfunded East Dillon Lions, introducing Michael B. Jordan as quarterback Vince Howard.
A Perfect Ending
The final episode aired in 2011, and that autumn the Television Academy finally caught up: Kyle Chandler won the Emmy for lead actor and Jason Katims won for writing the finale, "Always".
