Gary Ablett grew up on Merseyside and came through the youth ranks at Liverpool, making his senior debut in the mid-1980s under Kenny Dalglish. He was part of the dominant Liverpool sides that won the First Division championship and reached multiple FA Cup finals — including the 1989 Hillsborough FA Cup final, a game that carries deep significance for the club and the city.
His move to Everton later in his career made him part of a very small group to have won the FA Cup with both Merseyside clubs — a distinction that sets him apart in the history of both institutions. Later in his career he had spells at Birmingham City, Sheffield United and other clubs before moving into management. Gary Ablett passed away in January 2012 after a battle with non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and is remembered with great fondness on both sides of Stanley Park.
