John Aldridge came to Liverpool in January 1987 from Oxford United, stepping into the considerable shoes left by Ian Rush's temporary move to Juventus. He filled them with remarkable efficiency — league champion in 1988, FA Cup finalist in 1988 and the club's first choice striker during one of Anfield's most successful eras. His one misfortune on the big stage was becoming the first player to miss a penalty in an FA Cup final, against Wimbledon in 1988.
A move to Real Sociedad in Spain followed before he returned to English football with Tranmere Rovers, where he became a fan favourite and eventually player-manager. For the Republic of Ireland he scored 19 goals in 69 appearances — an international career that included memorable moments at the 1990 and 1994 World Cups. After retirement Aldridge became a well-known voice on Liverpool FC's local radio coverage, remaining close to the club he served so well.
