Jamie Carragher came from Bootle and embodied everything that Liverpool supporters love in a player — commitment, passion and an absolute refusal to accept defeat. Seventeen seasons as a first-team regular, 737 appearances, the Champions League in Istanbul in 2005, the FA Cup in Cardiff in 2006. His partnership with Sami Hyypiä at the back gave Gérard Houllier's and Rafa Benítez's sides defensive foundations that produced trophies and unforgettable European nights.
For England he earned 38 caps and was unfortunate not to accumulate more, given the competition at centre-back in his era. He retired in 2013 and moved into television punditry on Sky Sports, where his honesty, knowledge and Scouse directness have made him one of the most respected voices in the game. A proper Liverpool man — born local, died red.
