Beckham came through Manchester United's youth academy alongside a group of players that would come to be known as the Class of 92. Gary Neville, Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt and Phil Neville were his contemporaries. Together under Sir Alex Ferguson they became the spine of one of the greatest English club sides of all time. Beckham won five Premier League titles at United, one FA Cup and one Champions League. He played for Real Madrid alongside Zidane, Ronaldo and Figo. He moved to LA Galaxy and changed how American soccer thought about itself. He played for AC Milan and Paris Saint-Germain before retiring in 2013.

For England, his legacy is complicated but undeniable. He was sent off against Argentina at the 1998 World Cup and came back to become one of the most important players of the subsequent decade. His free kick against Greece in 2001 sent England to the World Cup in scenes that are still replayed. He captained the country for years and led them to the quarter-finals of the 2002 World Cup. 115 caps. An icon who divided opinion, created history and wore the shirt with everything he had.
