Freddie Mercury formed Queen in 1970 with guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor, with bassist John Deacon joining in 1971. Their debut album was released in 1973, and by 1975 Bohemian Rhapsody — six minutes of operatic rock that every radio station said was unplayable — had spent nine weeks at number one in the UK. It is now the third biggest-selling single of all time in the United Kingdom. Queen’s Greatest Hits, released in 1981, is the biggest-selling album in UK chart history with over six million copies sold. The band sold more than 300 million records worldwide.

Mercury’s voice — a four-octave range with a vibrato that researchers identified as scientifically unique — was the instrument on which everything else was built. His performance at Live Aid in July 1985, widely regarded as the greatest live performance in rock history, lasted 21 minutes and transformed a televised charity concert into a defining moment of the decade. He wrote Bohemian Rhapsody, We Are the Champions, Don’t Stop Me Now, Killer Queen, Somebody to Love, Crazy Little Thing Called Love and Bicycle Race — ten of the seventeen songs on Queen’s Greatest Hits.
