Paul Gascoigne came through the Newcastle United academy and joined Tottenham Hotspur in 1988, where he produced football of startling quality — culminating in the 1991 FA Cup semi-final free kick against Arsenal that is still cited as one of the greatest Wembley goals ever scored. A serious knee injury in the final itself derailed a move to Lazio, but he recovered and spent five productive seasons in Italy.
His years at Glasgow Rangers produced three Scottish titles and some of his most consistent club football. For England, Gazza was the most exciting player of his era — the Italia 90 semi-final and Euro 96 produced moments of genius that defined two tournaments. His goal against Scotland at Euro 96 — the chip, the volley, the celebration — is perhaps the most celebrated individual goal in England's history.
