Jonah Lomu grew up in Auckland and broke into the New Zealand All Blacks squad as a teenager, making his debut in 1994. The 1995 World Cup in South Africa announced him to the world — four tries against England in the semi-final, each one more unstoppable than the last, in a performance that is still replayed as the most dominant individual display in the tournament's history. England's Mike Catt being run over attempting a covering tackle remains one of rugby's defining images.
Despite serious kidney disease that required a transplant in 2004 and ultimately took his life in November 2015 at just 40, Lomu played on with extraordinary courage — appearing at two more World Cups and remaining the most recognised face of the global game. His 37 Test tries stood as a New Zealand record for years. The sport of rugby union changed when Jonah Lomu played it.
