Marco van Basten scored a volley against the Soviet Union in the 1988 European Championship final that is universally regarded as the finest goal ever scored in a major tournament final — struck from a near-impossible angle, converting a cross that the goalkeeper could only watch. His three Ballon d’Or awards while at AC Milan and his European Cup victories placed him among the greatest strikers the game has produced.

Van Basten’s Milan years were where his genius was most fully displayed — two European Cups, three Ballon d’Or awards and a partnership with Gullit and Rijkaard that Sacchi’s system maximised completely. His early retirement at 28 due to ankle injury remains one of the most painful individual stories in the sport’s modern history.
