Marco Van Basten Netherlands Hoodie | Players Couture Icon Frame Collection
Marco Van Basten scored the greatest goal in the history of international football. It is not a claim that admits much argument. His volley in the 1988 European Championship Final against the Soviet Union, from an angle so acute that the ball had to travel at something approaching the impossible to reach the net, is the standard against which every subsequent great goal is judged. This Van Basten hoodie from Players Couture is for fans who know what he was and what he produced in a career cut short by injury. Fan apparel built around one of the great strikers of any era.
Van Basten was born in Utrecht, Netherlands, in 1964 and came through Ajax's academy, scoring 128 goals in 133 league appearances for the club. AC Milan signed him in 1987 and he transformed the club immediately, winning three Serie A titles and two Champions Leagues under Arrigo Sacchi and Fabio Capello. He was the best striker in the world during his time at Milan, combining physical dominance with technical excellence and a finishing ability that put him in the very highest category of centre-forwards the game has produced.
He won the Ballon d'Or three times in four years: 1988, 1989 and 1992. For the Netherlands, he was the outstanding player of their 1988 European Championship triumph, finishing as the tournament's top scorer and producing that final goal against the Soviet Union that defies rational explanation. His international career produced 58 goals in 58 appearances — a ratio of precisely one goal per game that makes him among the most efficient international strikers of all time. Ankle injuries eventually forced him to retire at just 28 years old. The career cut short by injury is one of football's great tragedies.
