Robin van Persie scored 132 goals in 278 appearances for Arsenal across eight seasons before joining Manchester United in 2012 and winning the Premier League title with a series of performances that justified every penny of the fee. His overhead volley against Manchester City in February 2012, described by Arsène Wenger as one of the greatest goals he had ever seen, and his hat-trick against Villa in the title-clinching match of 2013 bookended a career that traversed north London and the north-west with equal distinction.

Van Persie's technical quality — two-footed, excellent in the air and capable of the extraordinary from any position and any angle — made him one of the most complete strikers of his generation. His Netherlands career included the 2010 World Cup final and an extraordinary diving header against Spain in 2014 that produced one of the tournament's defining individual moments. His time at PSV Eindhoven, before Arsenal, was where his career began to attract the attention that would eventually bring him to England and to the top of the Premier League scoring charts.
