Roy Keane Nottingham Forest Hoodie | Players Couture

Roy Keane signed for Nottingham Forest from Cobh Ramblers in 1990 at the age of 18 and made 154 appearances for the club before Manchester United paid £3.75 million for him in 1993 — a then-British record fee for a midfielder. His three seasons at the City Ground were the foundation of the career that followed: a player developing the combativeness, the quality on the ball and the refusal to accept mediocrity from himself or teammates that would make him one of the most formidable midfielders in English football history.

Keane's Forest years coincided with the tail end of Brian Clough's management, and the young Irishman absorbed the standards that the great manager demanded while being given opportunities that his talent demanded he be given. His performances in the First Division and in the FA Cup runs of the early 1990s demonstrated a player ready for the very highest level — which Manchester United correctly identified and acted on before anyone else could make an equivalent offer. Forest supporters saw the beginning of something that Old Trafford got to finish.
