Managed by Sir Alex Ferguson following the passing of Jock Stein during qualification, the team travelled to Mexico with a squad full of respected names from Scottish and British football. The side included legends such as Graeme Souness, Gordon Strachan, Jim Leighton, Alex McLeish, Willie Miller, Maurice Malpas, Richard Gough, Steve Nicol, Paul McStay, Davie Cooper, Charlie Nicholas, Frank McAvennie and more. Many of these players enjoyed outstanding club careers with sides including Aberdeen, Celtic, Rangers, Liverpool, Manchester United, Dundee United, Sampdoria, Arsenal, West Ham United and other major clubs.

At the 1986 World Cup, Scotland were drawn in a difficult group alongside Denmark, West Germany and Uruguay. Although Scotland did not progress beyond the group stage, the tournament became part of football folklore for the Tartan Army.
