Seve Ballesteros came from a fishing family in Pedreña, northern Spain and learned to play golf with a cut-down club on the beach — a self-taught genius whose ability to manufacture shots from impossible positions became his trademark. His 1979 Open Championship at Royal Lytham was won largely from the car park and rough while his competitors played the fairways. It was the beginning of a decade of major championships and European dominance.
His contribution to the Ryder Cup was transformational — the partnership of Seve and José María Olazábal remains the most successful in the event's history. As captain in 1997 he led Europe to victory at Valderrama on home soil, completing a personal legacy in the team event that extended far beyond his 22 points as a player. He was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2008 and died in May 2011 at 54. The tributes that followed from across the entire sport confirmed a figure who was loved, not merely admired.
