Stefan Kuntz built a reputation as a clinical striker with intelligence, leadership and relentless work rate. Born in 1962 in Neunkirchen, Germany, he enjoyed a long and successful playing career across top German clubs.

Kuntz made his name at VfL Bochum, where his eye for goal quickly turned heads in the Bundesliga. His performances earned him a move to Bayer 05 Uerdingen, before he returned to Bochum and continued his prolific scoring form. He later starred for 1. FC Kaiserslautern, becoming one of the club’s most influential players and helping them achieve major domestic success during the early 1990s.

In 1995, he moved to Beşiktaş J.K. in Turkey, adding international club experience to his career before returning once again to VfL Bochum to finish his playing days. Across his Bundesliga career, Kuntz scored over 170 league goals, consistently ranking among the division’s top forwards.

International Success with Germany

On the international stage, Kuntz represented Germany with pride. He was part of the squad that won UEFA Euro 1996, one of Germany’s most famous tournament victories. Although he wasn’t always a guaranteed starter, his impact, professionalism and squad influence were widely respected. He also earned Olympic bronze with West Germany in 1988, further cementing his place in German football history.

After retirement, Kuntz transitioned into management and leadership roles, notably serving as head coach of Germany’s U21 national team, guiding them to multiple European U21 Championship titles. He has also managed at senior international level, adding further depth to his football legacy.
