Troy Deeney captained Watford for the majority of a decade — through promotions, Premier League campaigns and the 2019 FA Cup final — and became the most recognisable figure in the club's modern history through a combination of on-pitch leadership and a personality that made him genuinely engaging to anyone who followed English football. His goals, his commitment in every match and his ability to hold the ball up and bring teammates into play gave Watford a focal point up front that the club struggled to replace when he eventually departed.

Deeney's FA Cup semi-final goal against Wolves in 2019 — scored after running from his own half to convert — and his performances throughout that Wembley run gave Watford supporters the kind of memories that sustain loyalty through the seasons that follow. His honesty about his own career limitations, his commercial activities and his willingness to speak openly about issues beyond football made him popular with supporters in a way that went beyond the standard footballer-fan relationship.
