Crawford to Mississippi Valley State
Raised in Crawford, Mississippi, the sixth of eight children and the son of brick mason Joe Rice, he grew up far from the spotlight. At Mississippi Valley State he broke 18 NCAA records, catching 112 passes for 1,845 yards and 27 touchdowns in 1984 alone.

Prime Time by the Bay
San Francisco drafted him 16th overall in 1985. By 1986 he led the league in receiving yards, and in the strike-shortened 1987 season he caught 22 touchdowns in 12 games, earning NFL MVP honours from the PFWA.
He was Super Bowl XXIII MVP, then won again in Super Bowls XXIV and XXIX. In 1990 he led the league in receptions, yards and touchdowns in the same season, the first player of the Super Bowl era to do so. In 1995 he set a then-record 1,848 receiving yards. He finished with 14 1,000-yard seasons and a catch in 274 consecutive games, both NFL records.

Still Going at 40
Rice moved to the Oakland Raiders in 2001 and, at 40, caught 92 passes for 1,211 yards to help them reach Super Bowl XXXVII. After a spell in Seattle in 2004 he retired in 2005, and signed a one-day contract in 2006 to retire as a 49er.
He entered the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2010, his first year of eligibility, and NFL Films named him number one in its list of the 100 greatest players.
