A Sitcom Like No Other

Caroline Aherne and Craig Cash created The Royle Family with Henry Normal, who co-wrote the first series. It began on BBC Two on 14 September 1998 and broke the sitcom rules: almost every scene takes place in the living room, plays out in real time and was shot on film with a single camera, with no studio audience or laugh track.

Jim, Barbara and the Family

Ricky Tomlinson played the armchair-bound Jim Royle and Sue Johnston his long-suffering wife Barbara, with Aherne as daughter Denise, Cash as her husband Dave, Ralf Little as son Antony and Liz Smith as Nana. Jessica Hynes, Peter Martin and Doreen Keogh played the neighbours, the Carrolls, while Oasis's "Half the World Away" became the theme.

The Queen of Sheba

After three series and two Christmas specials, the family returned in October 2006 with "The Queen of Sheba", an hour-long special about Nana's final days. Watched by more than eight million viewers, it won the BAFTA for Best Situation Comedy, and Liz Smith won a National Television Award for her performance.
