Early Years in Kalamazoo
Derek Sanderson Jeter was born in Pequannock Township, New Jersey, on 26 June 1974, and his family moved to Kalamazoo, Michigan, when he was four. Summers with his grandparents in New Jersey made him a Yankees fan.
At Kalamazoo Central High School he was named USA Today's High School Player of the Year in 1992, and that summer the Yankees drafted him sixth overall.

Breakthrough in the Bronx
Jeter made his debut in 1995 and took over at shortstop in 1996. He hit .314, won the American League Rookie of the Year award and helped the Yankees to their first World Series title since 1978. Further titles followed in 1998, 1999 and 2000.
In 2000 he was named MVP of both the All-Star Game and the World Series, the first player to win the two awards in the same season.

Defining Moments
Jeter's reputation for big moments was built in October. In the 2001 American League Division Series against Oakland, he sprinted across the infield to grab a wayward throw and flipped it backhanded to Jorge Posada, who tagged out Jeremy Giambi at the plate. "The Flip" is still replayed today.
A few weeks later, as the World Series ran past midnight into November, he hit an extra-innings walk-off home run in Game 4. The scoreboard flashed "Mr. November", and the name stuck. In 2003 the Yankees made him their captain, a role he held until he retired.
On 9 July 2011 he reached 3,000 hits in style, with a home run off David Price on a day he went five for five. He remains the only player to collect all 3,000 hits in a Yankees uniform.

Farewell and Life After Playing
Jeter's final season in 2014 became a long goodbye. He signed off at Yankee Stadium with a walk-off single. The Yankees retired his number 2 in 2017.
He was chief executive and part-owner of the Miami Marlins from 2017 to 2022. In 2020 he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame at the first attempt with 99.7% of the vote.
