The fire is still burning. On 1 October 2026 Fernando Alonso confirmed he will stay with Aston Martin for 2027, saying he still feels "that fire inside" on race weekends. It has been a hard first year of the new Aston Martin-Honda partnership, with seven points from 17 races, but his charge to eighth at the Bahrain Grand Prix, moved to Sepang this year, showed the old racecraft is fully intact at 45.

Early Years in Asturias
Alonso was handed a kart built for his older sister when he was three, and he won his first race at seven. Three straight Spanish junior titles followed from 1993 to 1995, and in 1996 he became a karting world champion in a kart numbered 14, the number he still races today.

Breakthrough with Renault
He made his Formula 1 debut with Minardi in 2001, spent 2002 as Renault's test driver and then stepped into a race seat. In 2003 he took pole and victory in Hungary, setting youth records along the way.
In 2005 he ended Michael Schumacher's five-year reign to become the youngest world champion at the time, then retained the crown in 2006 after a gripping duel with Schumacher himself.

Defining Moments
A single season at McLaren in 2007 ended level on points with Lewis Hamilton, one behind Kimi Räikkönen. At Ferrari he was runner-up three times, missing the 2010 and 2012 titles by the narrowest margins.
Away from F1 he won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2018 and 2019 with Toyota, took the 2018–19 World Endurance Championship and won the 24 Hours of Daytona in 2019.

Later Career and Legacy
After two years away, Alonso returned with Alpine in 2021 and claimed a podium in Qatar. Joining Aston Martin in 2023 brought eight podiums and fourth in the championship, and he became the first driver to start 400 Grands Prix.
The 2026 rules reset has been tough, with early retirements and a car short of pace, but with a new contract signed he remains a benchmark for racecraft and staying power.
