Beardsley began his career at Carlisle United and had spells in North America before making his name at Newcastle United under Jack Charlton. It was his performances at St James' Park that earned him a move to Liverpool in 1987, where he played a central role in the title-winning sides under Kenny Dalglish. His combination play with John Barnes and John Aldridge was a joy — intricate, quick and constantly inventive.
After Liverpool he returned to Newcastle before spells at Everton, Bolton and beyond. For England he was a dependable and creative presence for over a decade, appearing at the 1986 and 1990 World Cups. Beardsley is remembered as one of those players who made the game look effortless — the sort of footballer you could watch for hours.
