Eusébio came from Mozambique to Portugal at 18 to join Benfica, where he spent his entire prime career — winning the 1961-62 European Cup and scoring twice in the final against Real Madrid. His pace, power and finishing ability from either foot made him one of the most feared forwards in European football across the 1960s. He was named European Footballer of the Year in 1965.
The 1966 World Cup in England was his international peak — nine goals in six games, including four against North Korea as Portugal recovered from 3-0 down in the quarter-final. He finished as the tournament's top scorer, and the image of him in tears after Portugal's semi-final defeat to England at Wembley remains one of the tournament's most reproduced images. He died in January 2014 and his statue outside the Estádio da Luz in Lisbon remains one of Portuguese sport's most visited landmarks.
