The second half produced little of note. Extra time provided the moment that overtook everything else: Zidane's headbutt into Materazzi's chest, the red card, the walk off the pitch. Italy won on penalties. Cannavaro lifted the trophy. Zidane was voted Player of the Tournament despite the red card and the exit.

It was the last professional match Zidane played. He had announced his retirement before the tournament and spent a remarkable run through the knockout stages proving exactly why he was considered one of the greatest players of his generation.
