Sami Hyypiä arrived as an unknown from a Dutch lower-league club and left as one of the most respected defenders the club has had in the modern era — a captain who led by example and whose coolness under pressure became a hallmark of Gerard Houllier and Rafael Benítez's Anfield sides.

Champions League winner 2005. FA Cup winner 2001 and 2006. UEFA Cup winner 2001. 318 Liverpool appearances. 105 Finland caps.

Sami Hyypiä joined Liverpool from Willem II in 1999 for just £2.6 million — one of the most remarkable pieces of transfer business in the club's modern history. His aerial dominance, composure on the ball and leadership qualities made him an instant success. He captained the club through the treble season of 2001 and was the organising centre of the defence that reached the Champions League final in Istanbul in 2005. For Finland he earned 105 caps — a national record — and was by far the finest player the country has produced. He later managed Bayer Leverkusen and Brighton.
