Kevin Keegan came from Scunthorpe to Liverpool in 1971 for £35,000 and spent six seasons at Anfield as Bill Shankly's most energetic weapon — winning two First Division titles, the UEFA Cup and the 1973-74 FA Cup. His link-up with John Toshack was the attacking partnership that underpinned the most successful Liverpool side of the early 1970s. He left for Hamburg in 1977 and won the Bundesliga and two consecutive European Footballers of the Year awards — becoming one of the most decorated English players in the history of European football.
For England he earned 63 caps and captained his country on 31 occasions — a natural leader whose enthusiasm and work rate inspired teammates across two decades. He later managed Newcastle United, Fulham, Manchester City and the England national team, returning Newcastle to the Premier League and briefly within touching distance of the title. One of English football's great characters.
