Ronaldo Nazário arrived at Real Madrid from Inter Milan in 2002 as the World Cup Golden Boot winner, having scored eight goals in Japan and South Korea, and delivered two seasons of goalscoring that confirmed the knee injuries which had taken three years from his career had not permanently diminished the quality that had made him the most feared striker in the world at his peak. His hat-trick against Manchester United at Old Trafford in the 2003 Champions League quarter-final earned a standing ovation from the home crowd — the rarest acknowledgement the sport can produce.

Ronaldo's goals for Real Madrid, his movement and his finishing under pressure made him the most complete centre-forward of his generation even in the slightly reduced version that the injuries had left. His partnership with the attacking players around him gave the Galáctico era its most reliably productive individual, and the 104 goals he scored across two seasons gave the Bernabéu a return that few strikers before or since have matched in the same timeframe.
