Wes Unseld remains one of the most influential centres ever to play professional basketball. Selected by the Baltimore Bullets in the 1968 NBA Draft, Unseld immediately established himself amongst the league's elite through remarkable rebounding, exceptional court vision and unmatched physical presence despite being considered undersized for his position.
His rookie campaign instantly became historic. Winning both NBA Rookie of the Year and NBA Most Valuable Player honours during his first season remains one of the rarest accomplishments in league history. His leadership transformed the Bullets into genuine championship contenders almost overnight.
Unseld spent his entire thirteen-year NBA career with the Bullets organisation, demonstrating incredible loyalty rarely seen in professional sport. Today, the franchise continues as the Washington Wizards Collection, making Unseld one of the defining figures in the history of basketball in Washington.
Across his career, Unseld collected five NBA All-Star selections while becoming renowned for elite rebounding, defensive toughness, intelligent positioning and perhaps the greatest full-court outlet pass ever seen from a centre.
