Few players have ever made an impact quite like Wes Unseld. Despite standing just 6'7", Unseld revolutionised the centre position through exceptional intelligence, elite rebounding, physical strength and arguably the greatest outlet passing the NBA had ever seen. Drafted second overall by the Baltimore Bullets in 1968, Unseld immediately changed the fortunes of the franchise.
His rookie season remains one of the greatest in basketball history. Unseld became only the second player ever to win both the NBA Rookie of the Year Award and the NBA Most Valuable Player Award in the same season, joining Wilt Chamberlain in achieving this remarkable feat. His rebounding, leadership and relentless determination transformed the Bullets into instant contenders.
Throughout his entire professional career, Unseld remained loyal to the Bullets franchise, now represented by our Washington Wizards Collection. Spending thirteen seasons with the organisation, he became synonymous with toughness, consistency and leadership, earning five NBA All-Star selections and establishing himself as one of the defining centres of his era.
The crowning achievement of his career came during the 1977–78 NBA season when he captained Washington to the franchise's first NBA Championship.
