Alexi Lalas became one of the most iconic faces of USA football during the 1994 World Cup, where his long red hair, beard, fearless defending and unmistakable personality made him stand out on the global stage. A strong, charismatic centre-back, Lalas represented the United States 96 times, scoring 9 goals, and played every minute of the USA’s four matches at the 1994 World Cup as the host nation reached the knockout stage. At club level, Lalas made history as the first American to play in Italy’s Serie A, joining Padova after the World Cup. He later became a major figure in Major League Soccer, playing for New England Revolution, MetroStars, Kansas City Wizards and LA Galaxy, as well as a spell with Emelec in Ecuador. With LA Galaxy, he was part of a side that won major honours including the MLS Cup, U.S. Open Cup and CONCACAF Champions’ Cup, adding silverware to a career already full of cultural impact.
