John Robertson scored the winning goal in both of Brian Clough’s Nottingham Forest European Cup victories — in 1979 against Malmö and in 1980 against Hamburg — making him the most important individual contributor to the most remarkable achievement in British club management history. Clough called him the best player he ever worked with, which tells you everything about how central Robertson was to Forest’s European success.

Robertson’s left foot, his crossing and his ability to deliver in the biggest European matches gave Forest a weapon that the most organised defences on the continent could not consistently stop. The two European Cup winning goals, in finals at the highest level, remain the most celebrated contributions any Forest player has made to the club’s history.
