Michel Platini remains one of the most elegant and influential footballers of all time. A brilliant attacking midfielder, free-kick specialist and natural leader, he played for Nancy, Saint-Étienne and Juventus, winning major honours across France and Italy. With Juventus, Platini became a European superstar, winning Serie A titles, the European Cup, European Cup Winners’ Cup, European Super Cup and Intercontinental Cup. Individually, he won the Ballon d’Or three years in a row, in 1983, 1984 and 1985.

For France, Platini earned legendary status. He scored 41 goals in 72 appearances and captained one of the most stylish international sides of the 1980s. He represented France at the 1978, 1982 and 1986 World Cups, helping his country reach the semi-finals in both 1982 and 1986. His 1986 World Cup campaign in Mexico is remembered for his goals against Italy and Brazil, including the famous equaliser against Brazil on his birthday in one of the tournament’s greatest matches. He was also the star of France’s Euro 1984 triumph, scoring nine goals in the tournament.
