In 1973, André began appearing regularly for the World Wide Wrestling Federation. He was presented as a heroic and seemingly unbeatable giant who could withstand attacks from several opponents and still emerge victorious. His extraordinary run made him a favourite among fans and a nightmare for rivals. Battle royals, in which numerous competitors attempted to throw one another over the top rope, became one of his specialities. His size, balance and power made eliminating him appear almost impossible.
Some of André’s most memorable achievements came during the first years of WrestleMania. At the inaugural event in Madison Square Garden, he defeated Big John Studd in the $15,000 Bodyslam Challenge. After completing the slam, André memorably began throwing prize money towards the crowd before Studd and Bobby Heenan intervened. The match established André as an important part of WrestleMania history from the very beginning.
At WrestleMania 2, André entered a 20-man battle royal that combined professional wrestlers with players from American football. The field included Bruno Sammartino, Big John Studd, The Iron Sheik, William “The Refrigerator” Perry, Jim Neidhart and Bret Hart. André ultimately eliminated Hart to win the contest, strengthening his reputation as wrestling’s King of the Battle Royal.
His transformation from beloved hero to fearsome challenger in 1987 produced one of the industry’s most important stories. Guided by Bobby “The Brain” Heenan, André confronted Hulk Hogan and demanded an opportunity to compete for the championship. The former friends met in the main event of WrestleMania III at the Pontiac Silverdome. André’s scale and reputation made him appear to be the one opponent Hogan might not be capable of defeating.
The resulting match generated an image that became part of wrestling folklore: Hogan lifting André from the canvas and completing a bodyslam before securing the victory. Their contest has remained a reference point for wrestling spectacle ever since. In 2026, the WrestleMania III showdown was chosen to receive the WWE Immortal Moment Award, confirming its continuing place among the most significant matches in WrestleMania history.
André would eventually gain a championship victory over Hogan. On a live television broadcast in February 1988, he defeated his famous rival to become WWF World Heavyweight Champion. Although the reign was brief and surrounded by controversy within the storyline, the victory ensured that André joined the select group of wrestlers who reached the top of the promotion.
He later formed the Colossal Connection with Haku under Heenan’s management. The pair defeated Demolition to win the World Tag Team Championship in December 1989 and carried the titles into WrestleMania VI. It was an appropriate final championship chapter for a performer whose size made him naturally dominant but whose timing and understanding of the audience also allowed him to work effectively with partners.
His accomplishments were not confined to one wrestling organisation. André won championship honours in France, Japan and the United States, including tag team titles with partners such as Michael Nador, Dusty Rhodes and Haku. He won the International Wrestling Grand Prix tournament in Japan in 1985 and faced prominent wrestlers around the world. This international body of work separates André from performers whose careers were built primarily within one company or country.
Outside the ring, André became a familiar figure to audiences who did not regularly watch wrestling. His television credits included a memorable appearance as Bigfoot in The Six Million Dollar Man, while his acting career reached its high point when he portrayed Fezzik in the 1987 adventure film The Princess Bride. His warmth and natural humour helped make Fezzik one of the film’s best-loved characters.
André died in 1993 and was selected as the first inductee into the wrestling Hall of Fame established that year. His name continues to be celebrated through the André the Giant Memorial Battle Royal, while photographs, stories and classic footage ensure that new generations understand his importance. He remains a standard against which every later wrestling giant has been compared.
