André lifted Studd and slammed him to win the contest before throwing part of the prize money towards the delighted crowd. One year later, at WrestleMania 2, he won a 20-man battle royal featuring leading wrestlers and American football players. Bret Hart was the final competitor eliminated, leaving André standing alone as the winner.
His most celebrated rivalry began when André aligned himself with manager Bobby “The Brain” Heenan and challenged Hulk Hogan for the championship. Their meeting at WrestleMania III in 1987 became one of the defining spectacles in wrestling history. The sight of Hogan lifting and slamming André remains among the most recognisable moments ever produced inside a wrestling ring. Decades later, the match was selected for recognition with the 2026 WWE Immortal Moment Award, demonstrating how strongly the encounter continues to resonate with fans.
André later defeated Hogan on a live network television broadcast in February 1988 to capture the WWF World Heavyweight Championship. It was the most significant singles championship victory of his career and added another unforgettable chapter to their rivalry. André also became a World Tag Team Champion alongside Haku as part of the Colossal Connection. Together, they defeated Demolition in 1989 and remained a formidable force heading into WrestleMania VI.
His wider career included championships and major tournament achievements across several countries. André won a heavyweight championship in France, held tag team gold in Japan and Florida, and won the International Wrestling Grand Prix tournament in Japan in 1985. He competed against generations of celebrated names, including Killer Khan, Big John Studd, King Kong Bundy, Hulk Hogan, Jake Roberts and the Ultimate Warrior. He also regularly worked in Japan, where his immense reputation and distinctive wrestling style made him a major attraction.
André’s fame eventually extended well beyond wrestling. He appeared on television as Bigfoot in The Six Million Dollar Man and took several film roles, but his most beloved performance came as Fezzik in The Princess Bride. The gentle humour and warmth he brought to the character allowed audiences to see another side of the imposing athlete. It remains one of the reasons André is recognised by film enthusiasts as well as wrestling fans.
Following his death in 1993, André became the inaugural inductee into the wrestling Hall of Fame created that year. His influence is also remembered through the annual André the Giant Memorial Battle Royal, introduced in 2014. Few performers have left a comparable legacy.
