Anthony Oluwafemi Olaseni Joshua was born in Watford, Hertfordshire, in October 1989. Proudly British and of Nigerian heritage, Joshua spent part of his childhood in Nigeria before returning to the United Kingdom. Unlike many elite boxers, he did not begin learning the sport at a very young age. Joshua started boxing seriously at approximately 18 after being introduced to Finchley Amateur Boxing Club.
His athletic ability, size and determination quickly became apparent. Joshua developed at an extraordinary pace, progressing from a novice heavyweight to one of Britain’s leading amateur prospects in only a few years. He won the senior ABA super-heavyweight championship in 2010 and retained the title in 2011, demonstrating the rapid improvement that would carry him onto the international stage.
At the 2011 World Amateur Boxing Championships in Baku, Joshua defeated several accomplished opponents and reached the super-heavyweight final. He returned to Britain with a silver medal after narrowly losing to Azerbaijan’s Magomedrasul Majidov. The result secured Joshua’s place at the London Olympic Games and established him as a genuine medal contender.
Olympic Gold at London 2012
Joshua entered the London 2012 Olympics carrying significant expectations in front of a home audience. His route through the super-heavyweight tournament included a close opening victory over Cuba’s Erislandy Savón, followed by wins against China’s former Olympic silver medallist Zhang Zhilei and Kazakhstan’s Ivan Dychko.
In the final, Joshua faced reigning Olympic champion Roberto Cammarelle of Italy. After falling behind during the early stages, the British boxer produced a determined finish to draw level on points. Joshua was awarded the contest on countback, winning the super-heavyweight gold medal at the age of 22.
The victory became one of the memorable British moments of the London Games. Joshua had progressed from taking up boxing relatively late to becoming Olympic champion within approximately five years. The achievement made him one of the country’s most recognisable young sportsmen and created enormous anticipation ahead of his move into professional boxing.
British and Commonwealth Heavyweight Champion
Joshua made his professional debut in October 2013, stopping Emanuele Leo in the first round at London’s O2 Arena. His combination of size, athleticism and knockout power made him an immediate attraction. He won each of his first 20 professional contests inside the distance, building a reputation as one of the most destructive heavyweight finishers in the sport.
A major domestic test arrived against long-standing rival Dillian Whyte in December 2015. The pair had history from the amateur ranks, adding genuine tension to their professional meeting. Joshua was tested during an intense contest but eventually stopped Whyte in the seventh round to win the vacant British heavyweight title while adding Commonwealth honours.
Only four months later, Joshua challenged Charles Martin for the IBF world heavyweight championship at the O2 Arena. Joshua dropped the American champion twice in the second round and claimed his first professional world title in only his sixteenth contest. He successfully defended the belt against Dominic Breazeale and Éric Molina, stopping both challengers.
The Wladimir Klitschko Wembley Classic
Joshua’s defining championship performance came against former long-reigning heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko at Wembley Stadium in April 2017. The IBF, WBA and IBO championships were at stake in front of approximately 90,000 spectators.
Joshua dropped Klitschko in the fifth round but then encountered the most difficult period of his professional career to that point. Klitschko recovered, hurt Joshua and sent him to the canvas in the sixth. Joshua survived, regained his composure and gradually worked his way back into the contest.
In the eleventh round, Joshua produced a dramatic finish. A powerful uppercut began an attack that resulted in two further knockdowns before the referee stopped the fight. The victory unified championship honours and confirmed Joshua as the leading attraction in the heavyweight division. The contest is widely remembered as one of the finest heavyweight title fights staged in Britain.
Joshua defended his titles against Carlos Takam before meeting unbeaten WBO champion Joseph Parker in Cardiff in March 2018. For the first time as a professional, Joshua completed the full 12 rounds, securing a unanimous decision and adding the WBO belt to his collection. He then stopped experienced Russian challenger Alexander Povetkin at Wembley, ending the contest in the seventh round.
Defeat, Redemption and a Second Championship Reign
Joshua made his American debut against Andy Ruiz Jr at Madison Square Garden in June 2019. Despite dropping Ruiz, Joshua was knocked down several times and suffered the first defeat of his professional career. The result produced one of the greatest heavyweight upsets of the modern era.
Six months later, Joshua faced Ruiz again in Saudi Arabia. Rather than entering another close-range battle, he used his jab, movement and discipline throughout the rematch. Joshua won a clear unanimous decision and regained the IBF, WBA, WBO and IBO heavyweight championships, becoming a two-time unified champion.
He defended the titles by stopping Kubrat Pulev in the ninth round at Wembley Arena in December 2020. Joshua then faced the exceptional former undisputed cruiserweight champion Oleksandr Usyk at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in 2021. Usyk won by unanimous decision, and Joshua was also unsuccessful in a highly competitive rematch in Saudi Arabia the following year.
Rebuilding with More Heavyweight Knockouts
Joshua began the next stage of his career by defeating Jermaine Franklin on points in 2023. He followed that victory with a powerful knockout of Robert Helenius and an impressive stoppage of Otto Wallin. The Wallin performance showed a more confident, controlled fighter, with the Swede’s corner withdrawing him after the fifth round.
In March 2024, Joshua faced former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou in Riyadh. Joshua dropped Ngannou three times and completed a devastating second-round knockout. He then challenged Daniel Dubois for the IBF heavyweight championship at Wembley Stadium, where Dubois secured victory in the fifth round.
Joshua returned to competition in December 2025 against Jake Paul in Miami. After a patient opening, Joshua took control, scored several knockdowns and ended the contest with a sixth-round knockout. In July 2026, he faced the heavy-handed Kristian Prenga in Jeddah. Joshua recovered from two first-round knockdowns to produce a dramatic second-round stoppage.
That comeback victory took Joshua’s professional record to 30 wins and four defeats, with 27 victories coming by knockout or technical knockout. His career achievements include Olympic gold, British and Commonwealth titles, two reigns as unified world heavyweight champion and victories over leading opponents including Klitschko, Parker, Povetkin, Ruiz, Pulev, Whyte and Wallin.
