Bill Russell’s name is inseparable from the history of the Boston Celtics. After joining Boston ahead of the 1956–57 season, Russell became the defensive foundation of a team that developed into the most successful dynasty the NBA had seen. He spent his entire 13-season playing career with the Celtics, winning an unmatched 11 NBA championships.
Russell’s first championship arrived during his rookie season in 1957. After Boston narrowly missed out on retaining the title the following year, Russell and the Celtics began an astonishing run of eight consecutive NBA championships from 1959 to 1966. He later added further titles in 1968 and 1969, completing a career record of 11 championships in 13 seasons. His collection of championship rings remains one of the most remarkable achievements in the history of professional team sport.
Although Russell was capable of scoring when required, his reputation was built primarily on defence, rebounding, intelligence and leadership. He transformed blocked shots into an attacking weapon, often directing the ball towards a teammate rather than simply knocking it out of play. His timing, athleticism and understanding of positioning changed how the centre position could be played.
Russell finished his NBA career with 21,620 rebounds, averaging an extraordinary 22.5 rebounds per game. He led the league in rebounding four times and recorded more than 50 rebounds in a game on two occasions. His impact could not always be measured by traditional statistics, particularly because blocked shots were not recorded as an NBA statistic during his playing career, but his control of the defensive end regularly shaped the outcome of the biggest matches.
Five-Time NBA Most Valuable Player
Russell was named NBA Most Valuable Player five times, earning the award in 1958, 1961, 1962, 1963 and 1965. He was selected for 12 NBA All-Star Games and received 11 All-NBA selections, including three appearances on the All-NBA First Team. These achievements are even more impressive when placed alongside his relentless focus on team success rather than individual recognition.
His battles with fellow legendary centre Wilt Chamberlain became one of basketball’s defining rivalries. Chamberlain often produced greater individual scoring numbers, but Russell’s defence, tactical awareness and ability to inspire those around him repeatedly helped Boston succeed in championship situations. For Russell, winning was never simply about personal statistics. It was about understanding what his team needed and finding a way to deliver it.
In 1966, Russell became player-coach of the Celtics, making him the NBA’s first Black head coach. He went on to guide Boston to championships in 1968 and 1969 while continuing to play at the centre of the team. In doing so, he became the first Black head coach to win a championship in a major American professional sports league. His final title came after Boston defeated the Los Angeles Lakers in Game Seven of the 1969 NBA Finals, bringing an extraordinary playing career to a fitting conclusion.
College Champion and Olympic Gold Medallist
Russell’s winning career began before he entered the NBA. At the University of San Francisco, he helped the Dons win consecutive NCAA championships in 1955 and 1956. The team produced a historic winning streak, while Russell’s defensive ability challenged established ideas about how basketball should be played. He was named the NCAA Tournament’s Most Outstanding Player in 1955.
Russell also represented the United States at the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne. Playing alongside his college teammate and future Celtics colleague K.C. Jones, he helped the United States win the basketball gold medal. The American team won all eight of its games by at least 30 points, defeating the Soviet Union 89–55 in the gold-medal game. Russell therefore belongs to the select group of players to have won an NCAA championship, an Olympic gold medal and an NBA championship.
A Legacy Beyond Basketball
Bill Russell’s standing as a hero extends far beyond his championship record. He was a prominent advocate for civil rights, equality and social justice during a period of profound change in the United States. He used his profile to challenge racism, support fellow athletes and speak openly about discrimination, even when doing so carried significant personal consequences.
Russell received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2011 in recognition of his achievements and wider contribution to society. The NBA Finals Most Valuable Player trophy carries his name, ensuring every generation of basketball fan encounters his legacy at the culmination of the season. Following his death in 2022, his famous number 6 was retired across the entire NBA, making him the first player in league history to receive that distinction.
