Born Santos Saúl Álvarez Barragán in Guadalajara, Jalisco, in July 1990, Canelo grew up in Juanacatlán as the youngest of eight children. Boxing ran throughout the Álvarez family, with several of his brothers also competing professionally. His pale complexion and distinctive red hair earned him the nickname Canelo, derived from the Spanish word for cinnamon.
Álvarez began boxing at a young age and enjoyed a successful amateur career in Mexico. He won silver at the Mexican Junior National Championships before returning to claim gold the following year. With professional opportunities for an amateur of his ability limited, Canelo entered the paid ranks at only 15 years old.
He made his professional debut in October 2005 and spent his formative years developing against a wide variety of opponents in Mexico. Starting so young allowed him to gain an exceptional amount of experience before most fighters reach world championship level. Canelo combined patience and defensive awareness with powerful combinations, a punishing body attack and an ability to counter opponents under pressure.
Becoming a Light-Middleweight Champion
Canelo’s first major world championship arrived in March 2011 when he defeated Britain’s Matthew Hatton for the vacant WBC light-middleweight title. The victory introduced the young Mexican to a much larger international audience and began an extended run at boxing’s highest level.
Successful defences followed against Ryan Rhodes, Alfonso Gómez, former champion Kermit Cintrón and future Hall of Famer Shane Mosley. Canelo demonstrated that he could defeat different styles, combining pressure and power with an increasingly sophisticated defensive game.
In September 2012, he stopped Josesito López before entering a unification contest against unbeaten WBA champion Austin Trout. Canelo dropped Trout and earned a unanimous decision, adding another championship while proving he could complete 12 tactical rounds against an elite opponent.
His unbeaten record ended against Floyd Mayweather Jr in September 2013. Mayweather’s movement, timing and defensive ability earned him a decision, but the experience became an important stage in Canelo’s development. Still only 23 years old, he returned with victories over Alfredo Angulo, Erislandy Lara and James Kirkland.
The Lara fight presented one of the most difficult stylistic challenges of Canelo’s career, while the spectacular third-round knockout of Kirkland demonstrated his destructive power. Those victories prepared him for an opportunity to become champion in a second weight division.
Middleweight Rivalries and the Golovkin Trilogy
Canelo challenged Miguel Cotto for the WBC and Ring middleweight championships in November 2015. The Mexican used his size, combinations and counter-punching to secure a unanimous decision over the experienced Puerto Rican champion.
His first defence came against Britain’s Amir Khan. Khan moved up in weight and used his speed effectively during the opening rounds, but Canelo remained patient. In the sixth, a perfectly timed right hand ended the contest with one of the most dramatic knockouts of Álvarez’s career.
Canelo later stopped Liverpool’s Liam Smith with a body shot to regain light-middleweight honours and comprehensively outpointed Julio César Chávez Jr. Those victories led to the first of three contests against feared middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin.
Their opening meeting in September 2017 ended in a split draw after 12 high-quality rounds. Canelo’s counter-punching and defensive movement were matched against Golovkin’s jab, pressure and strength. The result divided opinion and made a rematch essential.
Canelo adopted a more aggressive approach in the second fight, spending longer periods in the centre of the ring and matching Golovkin physically. After another closely contested 12 rounds, Álvarez received a majority decision and added Golovkin’s championships to his collection.
The rivals eventually met for a third time in 2022, this time at super-middleweight. Canelo controlled much of the contest and earned a unanimous decision, completing one of the most significant trilogies in modern boxing.
Championships at Super-Middleweight and Light-Heavyweight
Canelo moved through the divisions with unusual ambition. In December 2018, he stopped Liverpool’s Rocky Fielding in three rounds to claim a secondary super-middleweight title. He then returned to middleweight and defeated Daniel Jacobs in a unification contest.
His next challenge required another move up in weight. Canelo faced WBO light-heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev in November 2019. The naturally larger Russian used his reach and jab, but Álvarez remained patient and secured an eleventh-round knockout to become a champion in a fourth weight division.
Canelo returned to super-middleweight to meet Liverpool’s unbeaten Callum Smith in December 2020. Smith held the WBA and Ring championships and possessed a substantial height and reach advantage. Álvarez consistently moved inside the longer man’s jab, attacked the body and earned a wide unanimous decision.
After stopping mandatory challenger Avni Yıldırım, Canelo began pursuing every major championship in the division. His next opponent was Britain’s Billy Joe Saunders, an unbeaten southpaw holding the WBO belt. Their fight attracted an enormous crowd in Texas.
Canelo’s pressure and body punching gradually reduced Saunders’ movement. An uppercut caused a serious eye injury during the eighth round, and the British fighter’s corner ended the contest. Álvarez added the WBO championship, leaving only the IBF belt outside his collection.
He faced unbeaten Caleb Plant for that final title in November 2021. Plant boxed well during portions of the contest, but Canelo’s pressure became decisive. Two knockdowns in the eleventh produced the stoppage and made Álvarez the first undisputed super-middleweight champion of the four-belt era.
Further Challenges and a Second Undisputed Reign
Canelo returned to light-heavyweight in May 2022 to challenge WBA champion Dmitry Bivol. The technically excellent Bivol used his jab, combinations and movement to earn a unanimous decision, handing Álvarez the second defeat of his professional career.
After completing his trilogy with Golovkin, Canelo underwent surgery on his left wrist. He returned to Guadalajara to defend his championships against London’s John Ryder in May 2023. Fighting in Mexico for the first time in more than a decade, Álvarez dropped Ryder and secured a unanimous decision.
He then defeated undisputed light-middleweight champion Jermell Charlo, scoring a knockdown on the way to another wide points victory. In May 2024, Canelo handed unbeaten Mexican challenger Jaime Munguía his first professional loss, dropping him in the fourth round and winning unanimously.
A victory over Edgar Berlanga followed before Canelo faced undefeated Cuban boxer William Scull in May 2025. Álvarez won by unanimous decision and regained the IBF belt, becoming undisputed super-middleweight champion for a second time.
His next contest matched him against unbeaten four-division champion Terence Crawford at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. Crawford moved up to super-middleweight and produced a technically outstanding performance, earning a unanimous decision and taking Canelo’s championships.
Following that fight, Canelo’s professional record stood at 63 victories, three defeats and two draws, with 39 wins inside the distance. He has remained determined to continue his career and add further chapters to an already exceptional boxing legacy.
