Christopher Livingstone Eubank was born in Dulwich, London, in August 1966. He spent part of his childhood in Jamaica before returning to England and later moving to New York as a teenager. It was in the United States that Eubank began directing his energy towards boxing and developing the disciplined approach that would eventually take him to world championship success.
Eubank boxed as an amateur in New York and won the Spanish Golden Gloves tournament in 1984. Although his amateur career was relatively brief, it provided the technical foundation for a professional style based on balance, counter-punching, physical strength and exceptional self-belief.
He made his professional debut in Atlantic City in October 1985. Eubank completed several of his early fights in the United States before returning to Britain and establishing Brighton as his adopted hometown.
As his winning record grew, so did the personality surrounding the fighter. Eubank’s deliberate speech, tailored clothing, monocle, jodhpurs and theatrical ring entrances made him unlike anyone else in British sport. His signature vault over the ropes became an essential part of the show, while Tina Turner’s “The Best” supplied the soundtrack to his entrance.
Behind the presentation was a technically intelligent and extremely durable boxer. Eubank possessed an excellent chin, a sharp counter right and the ability to remain composed during exhausting fights. His confidence was not simply for entertainment; it was part of a psychological approach designed to convince opponents that he could not be intimidated.
Winning the Middleweight Championship Against Nigel Benn
Eubank’s first major championship opportunity came against Nigel Benn in November 1990. Benn was already the WBO middleweight champion and had earned the nickname the Dark Destroyer through a series of explosive knockouts.
The contrast between them created one of British boxing’s greatest rivalries. Benn was aggressive, emotional and known for overwhelming opponents with power. Eubank appeared controlled, theatrical and convinced that his timing and resilience would defeat the champion.
Their first contest took place at Birmingham’s National Exhibition Centre. It became a fierce and physically punishing battle from the opening rounds. Eubank suffered a badly cut tongue, while Benn’s eye became increasingly swollen.
Benn dropped Eubank during the eighth round, but the challenger recovered and finished the round strongly. In the ninth, Eubank landed a combination that left Benn trapped near the ropes. Referee Richard Steele stopped the contest with only seconds remaining in the round.
The victory made Eubank WBO middleweight champion and transformed him into a major British sporting figure. He defended the title against Dan Sherry and Gary Stretch before meeting Michael Watson in June 1991.
Watson’s jab, timing and technical ability created a difficult contest. After 12 closely fought rounds, Eubank retained his championship through a majority decision. The debate surrounding the result led to an immediate rematch at a higher weight.
Becoming a Two-Division Champion
Eubank and Watson met again for the vacant WBO super-middleweight championship in September 1991. Watson produced an excellent performance and was ahead on the scorecards entering the closing stages.
During the eleventh round, Watson knocked Eubank down and appeared close to victory. Eubank rose and immediately delivered a powerful uppercut that sent Watson backwards into the ropes. Early in the twelfth, the referee stopped the contest with Eubank attacking.
Watson collapsed shortly afterwards and suffered a life-changing brain injury. The absence of adequate immediate medical provision at ringside contributed to the severity of the situation and led to major changes in safety standards at British boxing events.
The incident affected Eubank profoundly. He remained world champion but spoke openly about losing part of his finishing instinct afterwards. Over time, Eubank and Watson developed a relationship based on respect, and Eubank supported fundraising connected to Watson’s rehabilitation.
Eubank nevertheless continued producing a remarkable sequence of championship performances. He defended the super-middleweight title against opponents including Thulani Malinga, John Jarvis, Tony Thornton, Lindell Holmes, Ray Close, Graciano Rocchigiani, Henry Wharton, Sam Storey, Dan Schommer and Mauricio Amaral.
His schedule was unusually demanding for a champion. An eight-fight television agreement resulted in Eubank competing frequently across Britain, Ireland, Germany and South Africa. His ability to prepare repeatedly and complete championship rounds became a significant part of his reputation.
Benn v Eubank II at Old Trafford
By 1993, both Eubank and Benn held super-middleweight championships. Their long-awaited rematch was staged at Manchester United’s Old Trafford stadium in front of more than 40,000 spectators.
Benn’s WBC title and Eubank’s WBO championship were both at stake. The event, billed as Judgement Day, became one of the biggest fights in British boxing history and attracted a vast television audience.
The rematch was more measured than their first battle, but both fighters enjoyed periods of success. After 12 rounds, one judge favoured Eubank, another favoured Benn and the third scored the fight level.
The split draw allowed each fighter to retain his championship. Although supporters continued demanding a third contest, Eubank and Benn never met professionally again. Their rivalry remained one of the defining stories of 1990s British sport and was later continued by their sons.
Steve Collins, Joe Calzaghe and Cruiserweight Courage
Eubank’s long unbeaten run ended against Ireland’s Steve Collins in March 1995. Collins scored a knockdown and secured a unanimous decision to take the WBO super-middleweight championship. A rematch in Cork produced another close contest, with Collins winning by split decision.
Eubank briefly announced his retirement but returned to competition. In October 1997, he accepted an opportunity to face unbeaten Welsh prospect Joe Calzaghe for the vacant WBO super-middleweight title at only 11 days’ notice.
Calzaghe dropped Eubank during the opening round, but the experienced former champion recovered and completed all 12 rounds. Calzaghe received the decision, yet Eubank’s resilience against a younger elite opponent increased the respect in which he was held.
Eubank then moved up to cruiserweight to challenge Carl Thompson for the WBO championship. Giving away natural size and weight, he pushed Thompson through 12 extremely demanding rounds before losing a unanimous decision.
An immediate rematch took place three months later. Eubank competed bravely but developed severe swelling around his eye. His corner retired him after the ninth round, producing the only stoppage defeat of his professional career.
Eubank retired with 45 victories, five defeats and two draws, including 23 wins inside the distance. He held WBO championships at middleweight and super-middleweight, remained unbeaten throughout his first decade as a professional and completed numerous world-title contests.
