Diego Maradona Napoli Hoodie | Players Couture

Diego Maradona won two Serie A titles with Napoli — in 1987 and 1990 — transforming a club that had never won the Italian championship into the dominant force in the country for a four-year period that supporters in the city still speak of in terms that go beyond sport. His arrival in 1984 for a then-world record fee represented a statement of ambition from a club operating in the shadow of Juventus, AC Milan and Inter, and his subsequent performances justified every lira of it.

Maradona's Napoli years were the fullest expression of his genius at club level. The city adopted him as one of their own, the relationship between player and supporters becoming something that transcended the usual dynamic between a footballer and a club. His Serie A goals, his creative play and his ability to make the difference in the biggest matches gave Napoli something they had never had before and have not replicated since. The UNESCO title win of 1987 was the centrepiece of the most remarkable individual contribution to a club's history in European football.
