Dietmar “Didi” Hamann built a career as one of the most intelligent defensive midfielders of his generation. After coming through at Bayern Munich, he became part of a hugely successful side, winning major honours in Germany before moving to England. He played for Newcastle United, became a cult hero at Liverpool, later joined Manchester City, and finished his playing career with MK Dons. His calm passing, tactical discipline and ability to control big matches made him a favourite with fans who appreciated football intelligence as much as flair.

For Liverpool supporters, Hamann will always be remembered as a key figure in one of the greatest nights in football history. His half-time introduction in the 2005 European club football final helped change the game, giving Liverpool the balance and control they needed during the famous comeback against AC Milan. He also scored in the penalty shootout, despite playing through injury, securing his place as a true fan hero. Hamann was also part of Liverpool’s successful early-2000s era, including the treble-winning 2000–01 season, when the club lifted the FA Cup, League Cup and UEFA Cup.

Internationally, Hamann represented Germany with distinction, earning 59 senior caps and scoring 5 goals. He played at the 1998 World Cup and was a major part of Germany’s run to the 2002 World Cup final, where they finished runners-up to Brazil. He also appeared at European Championships and famously scored the final goal at the old Wembley Stadium when Germany beat England in 2000.
