Gareth Bale scored the most celebrated overhead kick in Champions League final history against Liverpool in 2018 in Kyiv — coming on as a substitute, producing a bicycle kick of such quality that Loris Karius stood motionless, and then adding a second goal that settled the match. He won four Champions League trophies at Real Madrid across nine seasons, with his goals in finals in 2014, 2016, 2018 and 2022 making him one of the most impactful squad players in the competition's modern history.

Bale's Madrid career was complicated by the relationship with certain sections of the Bernabéu support who wanted more than his actual contributions, which by any objective measure — European Cup medals, important goals in knockout matches and a record transfer fee justified by performances — were extraordinary. His most iconic contribution remains the Kyiv bicycle kick: an overhead strike that put the ball in the top corner before anyone in the ground had fully processed that a shot had been attempted.
