After starring for the University of Houston, Olajuwon entered the NBA as the first overall draft selection in 1984. From that point onwards he became synonymous with the Houston Rockets, leading the franchise through one of its greatest eras.
Across an outstanding professional career, he amassed more than 26,000 points, over 13,000 rebounds and remains the NBA's all-time leader in blocked shots. His famous "Dream Shake" remains one of the most celebrated signature moves basketball has ever seen, admired by coaches, players and fans across multiple generations.
Olajuwon's trophy cabinet reflects his greatness. He captured two NBA Championships, won NBA Finals MVP twice, earned NBA Most Valuable Player honours and was recognised as Defensive Player of the Year. His defensive dominance saw him selected to numerous All-Defensive teams while his complete game earned repeated All-NBA honours throughout his career.
He also became one of only a handful of players in league history to record quadruple-doubles and remains one of the few athletes ever to rank amongst the all-time leaders in points, rebounds, steals and blocked shots simultaneously.
After leaving Houston late in his career, he spent a final season with the Toronto Raptors before retiring, although his legacy will forever remain tied to the Rockets organisation and its passionate supporters.
