Hakeem Olajuwon built one of the most complete careers the NBA has ever witnessed. Born in Lagos, Nigeria, he first made his name playing college basketball for the University of Houston as part of the legendary "Phi Slama Jama" teams before becoming the first overall pick in the 1984 NBA Draft.
Although that draft famously included Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley and John Stockton, Houston's decision to select Olajuwon proved fully justified. He became the face of the franchise for almost two decades and remains the greatest player in Houston Rockets history.
During his NBA career, Olajuwon transformed the centre position with extraordinary footwork, elite timing and incredible defensive instincts. His famous "Dream Shake" became one of basketball's most unstoppable moves and continues to be studied and copied by modern NBA stars around the world.
His list of achievements is remarkable. Olajuwon won two NBA Championships with the Houston Rockets, earning NBA Finals MVP honours on both occasions. He was named NBA Most Valuable Player, Defensive Player of the Year and became one of the very few players in league history to win MVP, Finals MVP and Defensive Player of the Year in the same season.
He was selected as an NBA All-Star 12 times, earned multiple All-NBA First Team selections and was repeatedly named to the NBA All-Defensive First Team. Even decades after retirement, he remains the NBA's all-time leader in blocked shots and ranks amongst the greatest rebounders and scorers ever to play the game.
Olajuwon was equally respected by teammates and opponents. Many of today's biggest NBA stars have travelled to learn directly from him, studying his legendary footwork and low-post techniques that continue to influence the modern game.
International Career
Originally representing Nigeria during his early basketball journey, Olajuwon later became a United States citizen and represented Team USA at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. Playing alongside many of the NBA's biggest names, he helped secure the Olympic Gold Medal, adding international success to an already extraordinary professional career.
