Marco Reus spent twelve seasons at Borussia Dortmund, turning down approaches from clubs who could have offered more in the way of guaranteed trophies, because his connection to the club and the city made the choice straightforward. His technical quality, his direct running and his goals gave BVB supporters one of the most loyal servants any German club has had in the modern era.

Reus’s career was interrupted by a series of serious injuries that limited the full expression of what he could have achieved — but the performances when fit, and the loyalty across a decade at a club that the biggest names in Europe were always prepared to outbid, gave him a standing at Signal Iduna Park that no medal count could adequately capture.
