Muggsy Bogues remains one of the most remarkable stories the NBA has ever seen. Standing at just 5ft 3in, he became the shortest player ever to compete in NBA history, proving that intelligence, determination, elite ball handling and fearless competitiveness could overcome physical disadvantages. After starring at Dunbar High School and then Wake Forest University, Bogues was selected in the 1987 NBA Draft. Following a brief spell with the Washington Wizards franchise (then the Washington Bullets), he became a household name after joining the Charlotte Hornets. It was in Charlotte where his career truly flourished, becoming one of the franchise's most recognisable and beloved players.
Alongside stars including Larry Johnson, Alonzo Mourning, Dell Curry and Kendall Gill, Bogues helped transform the Hornets into one of the NBA's most exciting teams during the 1990s. His lightning-fast speed, elite passing ability and relentless defence made him one of the league's best point guards. He ranks among the franchise leaders in assists and steals and remains synonymous with the Hornets' rise in popularity.
Later in his career he also represented the Golden State Warriors and the Toronto Raptors, continuing to showcase the leadership and professionalism that earned respect throughout the league. While NBA championships eluded him, his legacy is measured by far more than trophies. Bogues changed perceptions forever and inspired countless future players to believe that height should never define ambition.
Internationally, Bogues proudly represented the United States during his younger playing career before entering the NBA and became one of American basketball's most recognised ambassadors around the world throughout his professional career.
