Richie McCaw came from Kurow in rural New Zealand and rose through Canterbury to become All Blacks captain in 2004 at 23 — the youngest captain in the team's history. What followed was fourteen years of sustained excellence at openside flanker: winning every ball, anticipating every breakdown, operating in that peculiar space on the edge of the law with a technical skill that referees found difficult to penalise. He won 131 of his 148 Tests as captain.
The 2011 World Cup on home soil — won despite McCaw playing the final with a stress fracture in his foot — and the 2015 World Cup in England completed back-to-back triumphs. He retired in December 2015 as the most capped player in rugby history. Knighted in 2016, he is the standard by which every openside flanker is now measured. He later became a helicopter pilot — naturally.
