The football legend Sócrates Brasileiro Sampaio de Souza Vieira de Oliveira brought elegance to the pitch. Known simply as Sócrates, he was born in 1954 in Brazil. He became one of the most recognisable midfielders of his generation. Tall, skilful and intelligent, he played with vision and creativity.

Sócrates made his name at Botafogo in Brazil. He later starred for Corinthians, where he became a club icon. At Corinthians he helped lead the Democracia Corinthiana movement. This movement gave players a voice in club decisions. It linked football with social change. He guided Corinthians to Campeonato Paulista titles in 1979, 1982 and 1983.

In 1984 he moved to Fiorentina in Italy’s Serie A. His time in Italy added European experience to his career. He later returned to Brazil and played for Flamengo and Santos. Throughout his club career he scored crucial goals and delivered unforgettable performances.

Internationally, Sócrates represented Brazil 60 times and scored 22 goals. He captained Brazil at the 1982 FIFA World Cup in Spain. That team is remembered as one of the greatest never to win the tournament. Their attacking style thrilled fans worldwide. He also played in the 1986 World Cup in Mexico. His leadership and calm presence defined Brazilian football in that era.

Off the pitch, Sócrates was also a qualified medical doctor. He balanced football with academic study. That rare combination deepened his legend. He stood for intelligence, freedom and expression. He passed away in 2011, but his legacy remains powerful among football fans.
