Virgil van Dijk transformed Liverpool’s defence from the moment he joined in January 2018, won the European club football in 2019, the Premier League in 2020, finished runner-up in the Ballon d’Or in 2019 — the first defender to finish in the top two since Fabio Cannavaro won it in 2006 — and is widely considered the finest centre-back in the world during his peak years at Anfield.
