Early Years: Lord Wandsworth and Newcastle
Wilkinson was schooled at Lord Wandsworth College in Hampshire and joined Newcastle Falcons, where he helped the club win the Premiership in 1997–98.
He made his England debut aged 18, off the bench against Ireland at Twickenham on 4 April 1998, and quickly became first-choice fly-half.

Breakthrough: Sydney 2003
Wilkinson was named IRB International Player of the Year in 2003, the year he defined. In the World Cup final against Australia he kicked four penalties, then landed the right-footed drop goal in extra time to win it 20–17.
He kicked a tournament-record eight drop goals at that World Cup and was voted BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

Peak and Pain: The Injury Years
After 2003 his body fought back: neck, shoulder, arm, knee and kidney injuries kept him out of Test rugby for almost four years. He returned to help England reach the 2007 World Cup final.
He finished with 91 England caps, 1,179 points and records for World Cup points (277) and drop goals (14), and toured twice with the British & Irish Lions.
