Honour a Colombian Football Icon

Carlos Valderrama is one of the most distinctive and technically gifted midfielders in football history. Known worldwide for his unmistakable blonde afro and calm, visionary playmaking ability, Valderrama became the heartbeat of Colombian football throughout the late 1980s and 1990s.

Born in Santa Marta, Colombia, Valderrama began his professional career with Unión Magdalena before moving to Millonarios and later Deportivo Cali. His performances in South America earned him a move to Europe, where he played for Montpellier in France, winning the Coupe de France in 1990. He later had a spell with Real Valladolid in Spain before returning to Colombia with Independiente Medellín and Atlético Junior.

Internationally, Valderrama earned 111 caps for Colombia and captained his country during its golden generation. He represented Colombia at three FIFA World Cups – Italy 1990, USA 1994 and France 1998 – and played a pivotal role in helping the national team win the Copa América in 2001 (as part of the wider Colombian football era he helped inspire). He was named South American Footballer of the Year in 1987 and 1993, underlining his influence on the continental stage.

Later in his career, Valderrama became one of the early stars of Major League Soccer in the United States, playing for Tampa Bay Mutiny, Miami Fusion and Colorado Rapids. He was MLS MVP in 1996 and remains one of the league’s most iconic figures.

Now retired, Carlos Valderrama remains a global football legend – a symbol of creativity, leadership and flair.
